why would the government folks that produced the ad want to drum up "future business"? they work at the census bureau, probably just want to boost the morale of their staff...doesn't cost any money to enter a competition...

you're not making any sense...

Christie,

The logic behind entering awards that are not prestigious is very simple: Advertising companies and individuals want to call their products "award-winning" as this helps with future/current business. This is easy to achieve when entering competitions that have many, many, many winners.

Best,

Stephen

Stephen,
No I do not work for the Telly Awards. I have entered work for years into this competition. I have won some and lost. I do not expect every piece I enter to win any competition. To think so is irrational. If you do not find the prestige in winning this award. Then why did you enter?

Stephen,

Your main point seems to have been that this had something to do with Draftfcb, and it does not at all.

Your link to the video does not work. Try this one (from the press release) ...

http://2010.census.gov/2010census/multimedia/videos/013879.html

The video ISN'T an AD, by the way. That would be something that you pay to put on TV or on the web, for example, but that's not the case here. You're mis-characterizing things in a defensive manner. It's OK to be wrong.

I don't work for the Telly Awards, but I will say that you only partially quoted the Telly website in order to position them as advertising industry awards, as it goes on to say ...

"... and programs as well as the finest video and film productions and work created for the web."

The awards are for video production, only some of which may be ads, but not in this case. The video would not qualify as advertising to compete in any advertising awards, because it isn't an ad, and you may have noticed that the categories mentioned were not advertising. Perhaps "prestige" is in the eye of the award-holder, but regardless, it had nothing to do with Draftfcb and you should know that. I think the Bureau did a good job with the video and I hope it helps count people and encourage more organizations to participate as partners with the Census.

Dunghammer,

I have no problems with the videographers who made this video, as they were just doing a job that they were hired to perform. That doesn't mean that the video isn't the cheesiest advertisement I've ever seen! And you are completely incorrect when you write that they aren't advertising awards, because the Telly Awards web site clearly states that the awards are "honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials..." I am making no judgments about the "Videographer Award of Excellence" because I did not look into that award's legitimacy.

Thanks,

Stephen

This press release has absolutely NOTHING to do with Draftfcb. The videos which won the legitimate and respected awards were, as the press release says "produced by the Public Information Office at the U.S. Census Bureau", not by Draftfcb. Indeed, Tellys are not a high-profile award. They are not advertising industry awards, either. You imply that they are. I'm assuming you just don't know. They are niche, video production industry awards, and the video in question placed high in the rankings. You did not mention the Videographer Award of Excellence because they ARE high-profile within the video production industry. I looked at the video and I think it was very well done and that it will help the Census Bureau count heads and boost their Partnership efforts.

You need to check your facts before you spout off about things you know nothing about. Some people might mistake you for a journalist or something, and you most certainly are not. You are whiny, irrational, and wrong about things. Maybe you should team up with Rush Limbaugh.

Christie,

I suspect that you work for the Telly Awards or have some sort of agenda here. Numerous advertising and marketing professionals, including Jim Edwards, the former managing editor of Adweek (the industry's most reputable trade publication, have all stated opinions on the contrary to the views that you are expressing.

Best regards,

Stephen

For the people who do not have a clue about the Telly Awards. This is a reputable competition that has been around for 30 years. There are thousands of entries yes, but there are only about 10% who are Silver Winners and 25% who are Bronze winners. I have heard of sore losers but sore winners are very interesting to hear. Find out your information before you decide to post something on a website where you have no clue what you are talking about!
